Abstract
This study examined the effects of integrative art psychotherapy on the traumatized self-system and mental health(e.g., depression, alexithymia, and somatization) of a female college student who experienced the beginning life trauma. The study period spanned from July 23, 2014 to April 22, 2015, and a 50-minute weekly or bi-weekly therapy session was held for a total of 32 therapy sessions. The study subject was a female college sophomore in her 20s attending K University. Measuring tools used in the study included the Traumatic Self-System Scale (TSSS) the Korean Beck Depression Inventory, the 20-Item Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20), and the Symptom Checklist- 90-Revision. Data analyses were used for the pre, post, and follow-up scores measured, and the session details were examined for each phase. Firstly, integrative art psychotherapy had an effect on the traumatized self-system of a female college student. Secondly, integrative art psychotherapy had an effect on her mental health. A follow-up evaluation revealed that the positive effects of psychotherapy were sustained even after the termination of therapy. The findings of this study shed light on the efficacy of integrative art psychotherapy in treating the traumatized self-system and improving mental health after experiencing the beginning life trauma. Therefor, it is possible to say that it gives a significance for the earliest therapeutic intervention possible in view of the curative value.
